Terms of service

You were shown three amounts. You did not pick them. The middle one was built to feel correct, the lowest to feel embarrassing. Naming your own amount felt like freedom, but the screen still asked the question, and the screen was watching, which you could feel, which was the point.

Tipping expanded from a gratuity for service into a default expectation at the moment of payment, applied by screens to transactions where no service occurred.

This site provides no service. There is nothing here to tip for. If you tipped anyway, the conditioning is the finding.

Payments are real and go to a person. No tip was ever required. If you tipped anyway, that is real money, really spent.

We are not siding with Mr. Pink. Tipping has its place. The trouble is it now turns up in every place. Somewhere a thank-you for good service became a way to cover the wages an employer would rather not pay.
